All arrived safely on the Thursday ahead of the referees briefing on that evening. Rules discussed, no changes until next year, with trials at various open and premier league competitions . The main topic was that no mobile phones around the areas and they had to be switched off. Areas were allocated, with Billy being made tatami chief on one of the areas for the competition
On my area, it was good to see some England fighters doing well I got to judge on 2 finals that evening
Steve got selected to do 2 kumite finals, and Peter was picked for his first ever European Kata final. A Close decision 3-2, but in the 3 !!
All officials from England involved in bronze medal bouts and tricky matches. De-brief later that afternoon, main topic again was the grabbing and pulling, wrestling issues.
At the meeting, European pins for service , 10yrs, 15yrs and 20yrs were given out, and I am please to announce that Billy was awarded the Gold pin for 20 years service. What a fantastic achievement and only the 3rd person in England to receive the pin. I must congratulate him on behalf of Referees Dept. not only in achieving this but surviving at the top for so long, starting at your 1st qualification in 1994 at European championships held in Birmingham. Well done from me and thank you for your contribution Europe, with your backup to me, and instilling a strong team spirit within the referees department.
