Ady Gray appointed as the EKF Head Kata Coach

Ady GrayDear Members,

On Tuesday this week we held interviews for the Head Coach roles for kata, kumite and para. We were very impressed with the standard of applicants and the quality of the interviews.

Whilst it was an incredibly tough decision, we are delighted to announce that Ady Gray has been appointed as the new Head Coach for Kata.

Ady has a wealth of experience which he brings with him, this will stand him in good stead as he begins to draw up a performance framework for the squad. Ady will be hitting the ground running and will be leading the squad training this Sunday in Walsall.

We would like to thank Interim Head Kata Coach Paul Braid for all his hard work supporting and leading the Kata Squad over the last 10 months.

We wish Ady all the very best in his new role. Kumite and Para appointments will be made in the near future.

New EKF Selection Criteria and the New Performance Framework for Kumite

In order to take National Association Coaches and National Club Coaches (for those clubs with EKF Club Membership) through the 2 documents, we will be holding a workshop on Saturday 29th June 2019 10:00am – 2:00pm. The workshop will provide the opportunity to discuss the documents and importantly Coaches will be taken through the ‘Fighting Fundamentals’ as set out in the EKF Performance Framework document. We will also take the opportunity to reflect on progress made since the 27th October 2018 National Association Coaches meeting.

The implementation date for the new criteria is planned for the 1st August 2019.

The location of the meeting will be confirmed and will be held within the Midlands Region.

To register to attend or for further information please contact the EKF Squad Administrator Isla Hall on 07971361944 or email performancedirector@englishkaratefederation.com. Attendance confirmation will need to be received no later than Friday 21st June 2019.

Congratulations to Joe Kellaway for his Bronze Medal

The EKF would like to congratulate Joe Kellaway on his magnificent Bronze Medal achieved at the Europeans Karate Federation Senior European Championships in Guadalajara, Spain.

We caught up with Joe who said:

"I felt my dreams of being an Olympian was fading away, as you know sport can be a dark & lonely place when nothing is going right but I changed and adapted my training and believed in the process.

For this championships I used my brain and patience instead of just physicality. Then look what happened, I got what I’ve earned and sacrificed for, I created my moment."

Joe now qualifies for the European Games and continues to pursue his quest for Olympic qualification.

Squad Training dates important updates

Dear all, there has been much confusion surrounding the upcoming A Squad Training on Sunday 20th January 2019. Please see below the training dates and times for all Squad training dates, selections and referees and coaches accreditation courses which was published on the EKF Website on 29th November 2019. Since that time we are aware that it has been difficult to locate it, this coupled with some technical problems which prevented us from establishing the usual registration and payment arrangements. The training will go ahead as planned and all A Squad athletes are to attend. We fully apologise for the inconvenience.

How to pay? In order to attend the training please pay via the bank details below, the fee is £20 which can be cross referenced following registration on the day.

When making payment, please use the following references followed by the athletes name:

For Kumite eg: Nat KUM G Best
For Kata eg: Nat Kata G Best

The bank details for all payments are as follows:

EKF Kumite and Kata Squad Training dates and Referees Courses and Coach Accreditation for 2019.

Changes to Squad Training for 2019
From January 2019 National squad training for Kumite and Kata will take place at the same venue on the same day.

Kumite training times will be 9:30am-1:30pm and Kata training times will be 2:00pm-6:00pm.

As there will be no need for a lunch break the training sessions will be more intense incorporating short drink breaks only.

It is planned that joint Kumite and Kata strength and conditioning training will take place each quarter and on those dates Kumite will start and end at the same times and Kata will commence at 12:30pm finishing at 4:30pm, the applicable months are January, April, July and October.

The referee’s department will align their training courses, exams and coaches accreditation to squad training dates. Please refer to the dates set out below. Please note that only elite referees will be commissioned to officiate at selections.

On selection days, accredited coaches will be allowed to remain in the hall and observe selections. We see this as an important opportunity for coaches to view their athlete’s performance.

This will be trialled from January 2019 and coaches will need to show and display their EKF coach accreditation card in order to observe selections.

Kumite and Kata 2019 Squad Training and Selections Calendar:
